Paeonia 'Bartzela' (Itoh Peony)
Peony 'Bartzella' is a hybrid variety of interspecific peony, which belongs to the group of Itoh hybrids (Itoh hybrids, or Itoh peonies (Itoh Hybrid Group, or Itoh Group, or Itoh hybrids, or Intersectional Hybrids, or I-Hybrids) is a group of varieties created by crossing tree and herbaceous peonies. It has gained popularity due to its large, bright flowers, resistance and long flowering period.
The Bartzella peony is ideal for gardeners who want to add color and elegance to their garden. Its rich, sunny flowers will become the centerpiece of any arrangement.
Introduced into cultivation in 1986, this outstanding Itoh hybrid was created by renowned breeder Roger Anderson in the USA. The variety quickly gained popularity due to its bright yellow flowers, resistance and abundant flowering.
The name "Bartzella" was given by Roger Anderson in honor of the family pastor, whose surname was Barts. The breeder's wife insisted on adding "ella" to soften the name.
Many consider this variety to be Roger Anderson's finest introduction to intersectional peonies. And yes, this variety wins the American Peony Society Gold Medal, 2006.

About Intersectional Peonies
Intersectional peonies are a relatively new class of peonies created by crossing herbaceous garden species with tree peony species. They are often called "Ito peonies" because the original cross was first successfully made by Japanese scientist and breeder Toichi Ito in 1948. Unfortunately, he passed away before he saw one of his crosses bloom. Since then, other hybridizers have continued his work, including American breeder Roger Anderson.
Intersectional peonies have the best qualities of both garden and tree peonies, including:
